Starburst is the first thing that came to mind. It’s one of those words that carry memory.
One of my first jobs was at a rollerskating rink. It’s still one of my Top 5 favorite jobs. I got paid to skate. I did other stuff too; DJ, snack bar, skate room, etc. But my absolute favorite was skating. If I was on a 5 hour shift, my boss would have to tell (demand) me to take a break. I never wanted to stop skating.
And technically I haven’t… but we won’t talk about my injury last April. (Pro Tip: Ease – slowly – back into activities you’ve been absent from for over a decade.)
Anyway, at that rink, we had a starburst on the back wall. It was made up of tiny lights that spun out from the center. Thousands of times, I would skate around that circle and drag my hand across the carpeted wall, looking at the changes of light on my skin.
It was one of those pivotal periods in life…. not quite a kid anymore and not really an adult. That skating rink was my sanctuary. I definitely miss those lights.
